MONTE VISTA - One of the San Luis Valley's most famous visitors has made its annual return.
Many of the 18,000 greater sandhill cranes expected to stop in the valley on their annual spring migration have already arrived, ready for their feature role in the Monte Vista Crane Festival, which starts Friday.
I just got back from the festival. Although there were cranes near Monte Vista, I mostly saw them northeast of Alamosa. There were hundreds in the fields south of the Aligator place on Friday, what a sight. This morning as I was driving east out of the valley, hundreds were flying low heading from east to west of the valley. I have to add that I was very pleased with how nice the people were in the valley.
Oh and the Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge is chock full of geese and ducks in one ice free pond, made for great viewing.
