need help with a shore bird
I came across a shore bird that I need help with. Its legs are as bright yellow as could be. Its head down to its neck almost looks silver. The belly is very white. I am hoping it is a greater or lesser yellow legs as it would be my first big find! It looks like the picture in my book, but I don't have the confidence to call it that. If someone wants to take a look at it, it is on county road 74 east out of Eaton maybe 6 miles or so. Right before the pavement ends, there is a VERY small pond on the north side of the road. I have seen the bird there the last few days. I'm not asking anyone to make a special trip to check it out, but if ya happen to go by there, could ya please let me know if I got it right???!!! Thank you!!!

I had the chance to look for your bird today. I'm not sure if I found the right pond - was it behind a huge stack of bales of hay next to a feedlot? Anyhow, I did see a greater yellowlegs in a small reservoir across the road from the feedlot. I got a pretty good picture of it, and I will post it. You'll have to trust me on the yellow legs - believe me, they are bright yellow!
The pond behind the hay bales had Baird's and solitary sandpiper's, as well as killdeer. Judy Sanborn

When looking at yellowlegs, the greater bill length is more than the width of the head and on lessers the bill length is about the width of the head. There are a lot of lessers around, Crom Lake had about 80+ for about week not too long ago. Gary

Both yellowlegs seem to "talk" a lot, too, so if you can remember sound you might try "All About Birds" link under learning center (left side) on homepage, then click Bird Guide, type in your bird, search, click Listen to Sound link to match sound. Gary
