DOW Thinking About Allowing Hunt for NW Colorado Sandhill Cranes

Repost:

As there are often posts to COBIRDS reporting Sandhill Crane sightings, I think there are some members who would be interested in knowing that Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) is considering establishing a fall hunting season for Greater Sandhill Cranes in parts of Routt and Moffat Counties. This post is not intended to be pro or anti-hunting; it is about letting COBIRDS readers know what is being proposed and how they can have a voice in the policy making process of a species of birds that breed in Colorado.

A group of birders in the Steamboat Springs region (informally known as the Yampa Valley Bird Club) have started a petition to maintain the current state regulations which prohibit hunting of the Rocky Mountain population of Sandhill Cranes in Northwest Colorado. If anyone is interested in signing this petition, here is the link: http://signon.org/sign/save-nw-colorado-cranes?source=c.fwd&r_b...

If anyone is interested in writing a separate e-mail commenting on the proposal, here is the e-mail address for Parks and Wildlife Commission: wildlife.comm@state.co.us

According to the Colorado Division of Wildlife species profile of Sandhill Cranes, the Rocky Mountain population of Greater Sandhill Cranes numbers about 20,000 and the Greater Sandhill Crane is listed as a species of special concern.

If you wish to reply to this post, please be respectful of COBIRDS rules and regulations which state that pro-hunting vs. anti-hunting discussions are not allowed. This does not prohibit discussions on the status and effects of hunting on a species or group of species.

Sincerely,

Allison Hilf

Thanks, Gary.  I support hunting as a tool for managing wildlife, but I think these decisions need to be carefully considered.  I was unaware of this proposed change and will research the subject so I can take some sort of an intelligent stand.  Thanks again for the heads up!
