West Washington Park
Screech Owls have been back in our yard (urban) since November. They do make quite a symphony on some nights. I do beleive they frequent the bird baths on a regular basis also. We have have had the Owls off and on for about 6 years now but this season since Nov has been the best and actually phenomenal. Basically every night we hear them.
Six years ago we did see the Owlets as they started moving out of the nest. So far we have not seen and Owl just heard them. Until last night at 2030 hrs while letting the dogs out, I turned on the backyard spotlight and there was one of the Owls sitting on the fence!! What a sight, we both observed for about 5 minutes before the Owl flew off. I did get the binoculars on him but resisited my urge to get a pic as I did not want to flash him. I figured by the time I fumble with the flash he might be gone anyway.
This was a gray morph owl with the large yellow eyes. Sitting on the fence at about 8 inches tall. Low perched and listening to everything and watching the ground closely. To me this is one of the best backyard birds I have seen and pretty much my reporting comes from the yard or what I see in the alley.
Get some photos! :-)
The next time I will try but did not really want to disturb with a flash.
