Colorado Birder

A very windy day did not deter the spirited crowd of 20 birders who met at the Nunn Cafe for a day of raptoring. Nunn Cafe and the raptors did not disappoint.

Great Horned Owl - 6 (5 in Nunn (3 in one tree and 2 in same vicinity), 1 along WCR 124)
Rough-legged Hawk - 6
American Kestrel - 3
Red-tailed Hawk - 3
Northern Harrier - 5
Lapland Longspurs - dozens especially along WCR 21 in Carr!, WCR 108, WCR 49, WCR 124. A photogenic lifer for many on our tour!
Prairie Falcon - 2
Golden Eagle (the star) - 5 (one of which in Carr was directly overhead at low altitude in the stiff breeze allowing "once-in-a-lifetime" views)

WCR 124 Pond had open water and was chock full of Canada/Cackling Geese and Mallards.

Surpisingly "Raptor Alley" was devoid of raptors (windy) producing only a lone American Kestrel. Also, the Carr Merlins were nowhere to be found. Missed on Ferruginous Hawk, too.

Great crowd and lots of fun! The most traveled birders were from Breckenridge and South Park--thanks for coming!

Thanks
Gary Lefko, Nunn/CO

Gary, thank you so much for leading the tour. I learned a lot and the spouse got into it as well. We'll have to come down from the mountains again some time.

BTW, didn't we also see a redhead?

Gary, again a nice trip! Thanks for putting it together and kudos to the folks at the Nunn Cafe for dealing with the irruption of birders. Good food and good prices and pancakes that are as big as saddle blankets.

I had to bail out early in order to make the Valmont outing in Boulder where it was 60 degrees and no wind--I was overdressed. Good birds there, too.

Looking forward to more outings with you,
Fred

Gary and all,

Thank you for a lovely morning of birding! My friend, Pat, and I really learned a lot and were thrilled with all the birds we did see. We look forward to future events with all of you.

Still windy here (36mph) but the "missing in action" Ferruginous Hawk was on our telephone pole this morning and we saw two Bald Eagles on 35th Gravel Pond while out for football pizza run.

Thanks
