Colorado Birder

I was at Wild Birds Unlimited in Arvada last week and I picked up one of those pine cones covered with seeds. I finally put it out a couple of days ago and the birds just love it. So I'm thinking that it must be easy to make one, but I don't know how. (And I'll do the research, just thought I'd start here.) Has anyone done it before?

Not me but I tried one of their starter bird feeders-basically see held together in cyclinder form by suet with string to hang it-our finches/sparrows love hanging on it. Gary

It looks really easy to make. I've found instructions online. Just have to find the pine cones! Peanut butter mixed with cornmeal (1/2 and 1/2), smeared on the open pine cone and then rolled with seeds. Easy enough.

I've seen those cylinders and thought about those too! I'll bet you could make those too by using a can. Just mix suet and seeds and freeze. Just need to figure out how to get wire or string in the center (like drill a hole). . .

Weight the string...perhaps tie to a flat washer or a metal nut and the other end to a pencil or something longer than the can is wide. Position over the can, string in the center... THEN fill with your suet.

If you want to stretch your peanut butter, mix it with suet, as well. And for the health of the birds, please use natural peanut-butter...

There are a bunch of information and lots of recipes here:

If you render the suet before hand...you shouldn't have to freeze it. Besides, if freezing is necessary to hold shape, can you imagine the mess when it thaws? Ewwwwwwwwwwwwwww!

I make the stuff all the time. Just know that the fat you get at the butcher's is usually NOT suet, but it really doesn't matter.

Have FUN!!!
