Colorado Birder

About 2 weeks ago at Marshal Mesa trails near 93 & 170, I got a glimpse of a bird with rust colored wings, a white bar across it's tail near it's body, sitting in a tree briefly b4 flying away and that's all I can report. Nothing I have seen in my books or online seem to line up with what this bird may be. Either that or I'm seeing incorrectly.

Does anyone have an idea what bird this may have been? Thanks for any thoughts!

Was this a perching bird of some sort; like a sparrow or a song bird? What color was the rest of the bird?

Yes-I saw it land in a tree and perch for a few minutes before flying away from me. The body seemed to be a solid medium brown or dark tan. The movement caught my attention. It was midday and it flew to the east. The light could have affected my perception of it's colors!

I'm giving up....I can find the right wings and color; or the right tail but not both. I must not have seen this bird correctly! Thanks for the help!

Kathleen...that happens to EVERYBODY. Don't worry about it...you didn't get a good look. Maybe next time, huh? Even the very best birders, with the very best experience have this happen from time to time. Know it won't be the last time for you (like me, like them) and shrug it off...and have FUN! :)

What county do you live in? Go here and look at the "known" county birds and see if you can pick it out: http://www.coloradocountybirding.com/county/index.php

An Evening Grosbeak, male possibly? Most have migrated through already, the last one I saw was about a month ago (8500ft elevation).
