Interesting! It looks to me like a female House Finch, too...and leucistic. Good find!

Ohhhhhhhhhh... lovely shot! I got a good one like that of Magpies...a bit blurry, but you could see the lovely black-outlined primaries... here: Gosh I wish I had a better camera!

Or maybe it is a defensive measure; like camo? If he'd squat in that snow, you'd hardly see him! What fun, thanks for sharing, Mike!

Thank you...aren't they pretty little things? You should hear them sing! We got 14 inches of snow...and lots of broken limbs. Several down in my yard, one as big as my leg that fell just behind my little truck. Lucky me.

Great photos! Did you get much snow?

What a lovely photograph! Absolutely stunning... I hope you raised some money for the group. Will you tell us how it went?

I just love that sound! Sweet... Thanks, Gary

In my yard, I've noticed the adult males, which of course are not breeding now...don't flash their red much. In fact, one might not see any color on the black bird... I've wondered about this. Is it possible they hide the 'red' when they need to g...

November Birds

Well, I'm happy to report I can stop whining about the lack of birds in my yard. You might remember, I started birding this past February...so I don't have a full year's cycle under my belt yet. I had no idea birds just up and dissappear in October. It was shocking, bewildering and a little scary, if ya ask me. How one can go from hundreds of birds at the feeders in the yard to zip for days at a time is beyond me! But...all is well and all my little buddies are returning.

I'm participating in C… Continue

Leucistic Eagle

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Leucistic Golden Eagle found down here in SoCo a couple weeks ago. Did you guys hear about it? I posted the story on my blog...with quotes, links and photos from the papers...as well as an update a day or so later.

It's a beautiful, but very sick young bird which may make a compl… Continue

Books on Birds; What's Your Fav?

I am a reader; I like to research, I enjoy reference books…especially on topics close to my heart. I don’t believe one can have too many books on a subject…but then I am book rich and money poor. LOL

Okay, so I’m on a limited budget…I have a couple books on birds and know I want to enlarge my library. I think another ‘general’ field guide to birds I’m apt to see might be a good idea. While I’m interested in all birds…I doubt I’m going to be heading to exotic countries where I might have trouble… Continue

Summer is here!

First of all, I'd like to invite anybody who can make it down to La Veta (~3 hrs south of Denver) on June 14th for our AVAS Bird Walk. You can read details here.

The folks with AVAS are great...as are most birders, huh? I've never met a nicer bunch of people! A couple of us who feed birds will open up our yards to be included on the hike...yours truly included. It should be fun!

I can say that, havi… Continue

Birds in the natural world

As I grow in my birding, and learn how to watch them...I am more and more interested in photographing them in the natural world and not at my feeders. Still, I have neither the equipment nor the knowledge really, in where to find them...to do much else. Yet.

I discuss this and other issues in my blog. The folks who can catch an image in a bush or on a beach just astound me. Good birding!!!

Thanks. I am trying to get more active in birding and thought I could use some interaction with the similarly aflicted.

To me the female Broad-tails and the Calliope Hummingbirds look alot alike, how do you tell the difference between these 2 hummingbirds?
Also thank you for your comments on my Photo's.

We know of 4 bears in our area, one has a single tag and another has 2 tags. The bear in the picture was the one with 2 tags. He wasn't aggressive, but one more complaint and he's history. Hope this doesn't happen. We never put our garbage out overnight, but these critters are smart and I wouldn't be the least surprised if the one I commented on below didn't make Friday mornings his regular stop. We do our best to scar them off without making complaints.

Just posted this comment to another birder...
Yesterday's bear (Fri)must have known we put our garbage out on Friday morning's. It ambled down from the woods making a beeline for the cans in our cul de sac. He pulled one over and decided he didn't smell anything he liked. He then pulled over a second, gently lifted the lid and started scrounging around. I walked as close to him as I dared trying to shoo him away. He pulled one sack of garbage out ot the can and moved up a hillside about 20 yards away from me, sat down and began his feast. 15 minutes or so later he ambled back into the woods. He was a young guy (or gal) about 2-3 years old.

I got back from Idaho June 7th, Bev. Since then I have been busy with clean-up from our camping trip, re-entry into the workforce, and processing of the few pictures and videos I was able to take while on vacation (our weather was less than ideal, but we had a wonderful time nonetheless.)

I haven't had much time to reacquaint myself with our Colorado Birding community, but the pictures you have added are super! I wish I could join you on the 14th, but I am scheduled to work. Are these outings scheduled in advance? If you know the July or August dates I can try to schedule work around them. - Judy
