"Polly, just discovered this post; it's inspirational!  Believe it or not, I took the pups for a walk twice yesterday!  They'll learn how it's done soon; then I can take bins with me!  That was a beautiful story, thanks…"

Blue Grosbeak

"Did you hear from Margie that she distinctly heard Blue Grosbeaks around Ryus & Oak, the Skate Park and that side of Town Park?  Wouldn't it be cool if I got one in my YARD!  I'm keeping an eye out...and for that pesky…"

Western Tanager

"You know that lovely red color comes from a certain bug they eat.  This Tanager cannot produce it's own red, so the redder the face, the more available are these bugs.  I don't remember the bug, but wouldn't it be grand if…"

I'd rather not feed pests...

Posted on January 7, 2010 at 8:09pm 0 Comments

Okay, perhaps I'm a snob...but I'd rather not feed Eurasian Collared Doves, nor European Starlings. OR House Sparrows, if I could avoid it...but at least they're small!

Today, a fast 75 or so Rosy-Finches arrived (we got snow last night.) Okay, less than an inch, but the Rosies are like clockwork; if it snows, they show. The problem was that I have not seen them since Christmas day...the last of day of a several-day stretch of snowy days. They left that morning...so I have not been… Continue

The Rosies are back!

Posted on December 4, 2009 at 10:03am 0 Comments

My friend Bobby-O sent me an e-mail yesterday saying he had a large (50-ish!) Black Rosy-finches at the feeders on his deck. He is an wonderful photographer...I hope to get pics to post.

However, while I'd watched my own yard-birds while having my morning coffee, his alert caused me to check the yard again. WOW I had a flock of about the same number; mixed Black, Brown-capped and Gray-crowned Rosies! I got several (not very good) photos for my blog, and later in the day discovered… Continue

November Birds

Posted on November 24, 2008 at 11:00am 2 Comments

Well, I'm happy to report I can stop whining about the lack of birds in my yard. You might remember, I started birding this past February...so I don't have a full year's cycle under my belt yet. I had no idea birds just up and dissappear in October. It was shocking, bewildering and a little scary, if ya ask me. How one can go from hundreds of birds at the feeders in the yard to zip for days at a time is beyond me! But...all is well and all my little buddies are returning.

I'm… Continue

Leucistic Eagle

Posted on July 27, 2008 at 5:30pm 0 Comments

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Leucistic Golden Eagle found down here in SoCo a couple weeks ago. Did you guys hear about it? I posted the story on my blog...with quotes, links and photos from the papers...as well as an update a day or so later.

It's a beautiful, but very sick young bird which may… Continue

Books on Birds; What's Your Fav?

Posted on July 16, 2008 at 1:00pm 5 Comments

I am a reader; I like to research, I enjoy reference books…especially on topics close to my heart. I don’t believe one can have too many books on a subject…but then I am book rich and money poor. LOL

Okay, so I’m on a limited budget…I have a couple books on birds and know I want to enlarge my library. I think another ‘general’ field guide to birds I’m apt to see might be a good idea. While I’m interested in all birds…I doubt I’m going to be heading to exotic countries where I might… Continue

I'm very new...at this, I mean...but I make up for it in my enthusiasm! You can learn more about what I see here:
http//www.RuralChatter.blogspot.com My photography will get better. And of course my own personal information! I hope to meet others who enjoy hiking around, getting their feet wet, smelling wilderness smells and finding wild thangs in their sights...er...scopes.

I loved your pictures. I enjoy hawks and hummingbirds as well. At least the hummers are fast enough the hawks can't eat them. My hawks look pretty much like yours and they are Coopers hawks but I'm certainly no expert - In fact I just found out what they were from Gary Lefko.

I went to Bill Schmokers blog. I read all about the owls in boulder. It was really interesting! From there I ended up on a birder in Irelands blog and I am finding I could really spend a lot of time soaking up all this readily available info. Thanks for the tip! I think today I'll go get the book Gary Lefko recommended for me.

Thanks for your encouragement re: my videos. I am just now learning about water birds. Once I got the photography/digiscoping bug it quickly became obvious that water fowl is a great subject for learning. It's like shooting ducks in a barrel! I hope to become proficient enough to photograph/video warblers, woodpeckers and sapsuckers in Idaho in June. Not looking all that promising, though. There is so much to learn, so little time. -Judy

Hi Beverly
Thank you for the comments. The reason that the Franklin's Gull photo is so colorful is that I have a digiscope setup that gives a blue hue when the subject is very far away and most of the time the shots are not very clear. I don't know what causes this, I haven't gone thru the whole manuel. I love photographing wildlife and maybe one of these days I'll save enough dough and get one of the high megapixel long range lens camera.

Beverly,

Glad you looked it up. Great photos and web search. Saw mine at Monteverde park, Costa Rica 2004.
