I spent about an hour at Red Rocks Park (Jefferson Co) today, Sun. I saw two epidonax flycatchers, probably Duskys off of the limousine/motorcycle parking. There is a small stream there. A Spotted Towhee was just south of the Trading Post. Bob Canter

That is a reasonable question. This is the description I made in my note book dark eye stripe, short, dark tail, light edges on upperwing coverts rufous belly, legs feathered down to yellow feet, white rump. When I got home, I used Brinkley's Fiel...

I found a Rough-legged Hawk today Sunday, Aug. 30 at Two Ponds NWR in Arvada. It was hunting along the southern border of the refuge along Jellison. I've posted a full list on my blog Today at Two Ponds. Bob Canter Denver

Today at Two Ponds NWR

I get to Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge in Arvada about once a week. It was the best spot I visited today, because the prairie part, which is open, isn't focused around water.
Species seen:
Red-tailed Hawk
Mourning Dove 2
Nothern Flicker 4
Blue Jay 4
Black-billed Magpie 5
American Robin 5
European Starling 10
Red-winged Blackbird 3
House Finch 4
Most of the birds were in cotttonwoods, along the Church Ditch. The Blue Jays and Robins loved it there. The Red-tailed is often over or in the pond… Continue

Thanks for the report on what you saw at Bluff Lake! Sounds like a great day for hawks all around. :)

Bob, I'll take a stab at this...since Gary has shown me how to find were certain birds usually are in Colorado.

I checked on your Hawk and found this:

"Ferruginous Hawk
Description: An uncommon breeder in prairies throughout the state, except rare in the west. Generally easier to find and more widespread in winter. Dark morph quite rare; usually most common in the southeast part of the state. Away from the Pawnee and Comanche National Grasslands, this is a hard breeding bird to pin down, and the following locations are only suggestions. Enough driving on the plains will usually produce one. "

It goes on to say this is where they can be located:
(Birding Locations, County)
Campo Lek, Baca
Two Buttes State Wildlife Area, Baca
Valmont Reservoir complex, Boulder
Pawnee Buttes and Pawnee N. Grassland (E. section), Weld
Pawnee National Grasslands (western section), Weld

So...in my inexperienced mind, it sounds to me like you were lucky! Good for you!!!

Hi Gary and others
We drove down I 76 this afternoon from Nebraska. There were 16 to 20 hawks sitting on power poles in Sedgwick, Logan, Washington, Morgan, and Weld Counties. They were mostly Ferruginous, its hard to tell at 75 mph. Are these numbers common, or was I just lucky? It was between 1 pm and about 3
