What Flycatcher?

I saw this bird in Lory State Park around mid-June.  I'm guessing its a flycatcher.  Maybe not the Cordilleran, since it lacks the prominent white eye-rings I've seen on others.  My best guess is…Continue

Sandhill Cranes at Rowe Sanctuary

Posted on March 1, 2011 at 10:51am 1 Comment

I'm planning a trip at end of month to photograph Sandhill Cranes around Kearney.  Is the Rowe Sanctuary, morning or evening, a good opportunity for photos or can I achieve the same from one of the bridge overlooks?  I plan to scour the fields after sunup to looking for close-ups during feeding.  Any specific sites that someone may know or just the general area south of the river?  Many thanks!

I really hope to get out on one of Gary's bird trips.  I'm hoping to get back into birding.  It's been lots of years when I once had a nice life list and knew the bird's names and field marks....so many have changed names, lumped, split, etc. since then.  I also have a great need to meet folks interested in nature.  It's been a lot of years since I lived and worked at Rocky Mtn Natl Park where I was surrounded by like-minded people.  It's time!  Thank you for friending me.  I'm still trying to figure out this Facebook type of stuff!

It used to be that Guanella Pass was open to the top in winter.  I've been wanting to see winter ptarmigan there again for 25+ years.  The first I ever saw were on a Xmas Bird Count in Estes Park (I lived there for 30 years).  We hiked up Trail Ridge to where the Ute Pass crosses the road.  I got frostbitten on that trip and there were places the wind would not allow one to do anything but crawl, but I loved it!  (In my 20's then).  I was a ski mountaineer for years and first found ptarmigan on the Bierstadt Trail when my knees were good and I could ski the terrain.  Now I snowshoe the long, hard way.  I think it was about 6 mi. round trip above tree line to the Bierstadt trail, but there they still are in winter, some 25+ years later!

Thanks for your recent compliment regarding my moon halo pic as seen on channel 9 weather news recently.  It was a more or less a grab shot that I later took some artistic license with in photoshop to bring out the halo a little stronger than it actually was.  But the camera didn't do it any justice either compared to what the naked eye could perceive.  It was a perfect halo like I can't remember ever seeing before!  If only we could be blessed with some northern lights action now!
