Gary, Paul and I think the shape of the head looks right. Do not see the "long-tail" that the males have...so possibly a female? Really hard to tell. Polly Neldner

Albino Chipping Sparrow

My husband Paul came home from work last night and said he had seen an all white bird at the entrance to Cuchara Mountain Resort...So we just had to go investigate this morning. Our reward was our first ever look at a truly albino bird! We are assuming Chipping Sparrow...as the bird interacting with it is a Chipping Sparrow. May add more photos later!

Burrowing Owl near La Veta?

Hi Gary,

This morning we spotted a Burrowing Owl on Hwy 160, at the Valley Road cutoff to La Veta. When we returned from Lathrop State Park 2 hours later he was still there...appeared to be all by himself...not much prairie dog activity...a newer "town"...although we have heard of these little guys being out by the airstrip near Walsenburg...that is almost 20 miles away...is it unusual for them to be this high...about 7,000 feet?

Would appreciate your input.

Great Horned Owls

As I stepped out the door to take our dog for his late night stroll, I was delightfully surprised by calm...for the first time in nearly two weeks the wind was not howling! Then I heard 2 Great Horned Owls calling close...they seemed to be calling in tandem...one right after the other...then from farther away I heard another...then finally from a different direction and even further away I heard yet another! 4 at one time is a record for me...I lingered just a while longer that I needed to just… Continue

Good day

Today we went up to Pueblo Reservoir, and while we did not see a great deal...what we did see was special! We stopped below the dam and Paul started scanning with the scope...and the first things he focused on were 3 Long-tailed Ducks (1 Male, 2 female)!
Only the second time we have seen this species. The first time was in Alaska...so this was a first for the lower 48 for both of us.

At Valco Ponds in amongst the Common Mergansers was a single male Red-breasted merganser. That was a lifer for P… Continue

Fledglings

Hey Everybody,

The activity in our yard has increased so much that we have re-hung some of the feeders we had taken down several weeks ago when it seemed all we had was Grackles, Brown Cowbirds, and Red-winged Blackbirds.
So far we have the following fledglings in our yard: Pine Siskins, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Lesser and American Goldfinches, Gray Catbirds, Rufous, Broad-tailed and Calliope Hummingbirds, Yellow Warblers ( we actually saw a Yellow Warbler feeding and Brown Cowbird fledgling the… Continue

Hi Everyone,

We had a good birding weekend over in the San Luis Valley and then at our cabin in Forbes Park. We got off to a slow start at Zapata Falls...where we did not see any black swifts...but did see Spotted Towhees, an immature green-tailed towhee, Western Tanagers (one female had a red beak and it took us a little while to realize she had been eating the red berries we were seeing everywhere) and one Townsend Solitaire and a tree full of Bushtits
Then it was off to San Luis Lakes State Park...where we saw our first Black-crowned Night Heron of the day, but failed to relocate the Red-necked Phalarope...all the action seemed to be on the far side of the lake...and we have yet to purchase a spotting scope...sigh.
Next stop Home Lake State Wildlife Area, where we saw roosting Double-crested Cormorants, 7 Black-crowned Night Herons, Common Yellowthroats (a pair) , Lincoln's Sparrow (life bird), and a lone Clark's Nutcracker, then it was off to Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge where we saw 25 Black Crowned night Herons, an American Bittern (only the second we have seen), a single American Avocet, White-faced Ibis, and our long awaited Sora(a life bird) , a Marbled Godwit, American Kestrals, Northern Harriers and Red-tailed and Swainson's Hawks. We ended up at our cabin in Forbes Park...after a night of heavy rain we were up and at it again in the morning...seeing Spotted and Green-tailed towhees, an Orange-crowned warbler (another lifer, chasing him through the drenched willows was fun!) Warbling Vireos, young Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers sharing the same tree of course Mountain Chickadees and Mountain Bluebirds all in the meadows around the cabin. It started looking like rain again so it was back in the truck to cruise a couple of small lakes where we saw a raft of Ring-necked ducks, more coots and Eared grebes than we could count, Blue-winged teals all with babies in various stages of development. It was then back to the cabin where we waited out the rain and back out right after it stopped. We then saw a pair of Cassin's Finches and a Lazuli Bunting sunning themselves in the same tree along with some thoroughly drenched Song and Chipping Sparrows...with a gorgeous rainbow in the background...we ended the day with a wonderful look at 14 Red-crossbills...at close range...all these years I have wanted to see these birds and this summer I have seen them everywhere I go! This morning in our yard was a returning Red-naped Sapsucker, a flock of Evening Grosbeaks and Black-headed Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins, American Goldfinches, a single Cedar Waxwing, Rufous, Broad-tailed and Calliope hummingbirds...all in a all a very good weekend!

Hey anyone who was on the AVAS birdwalk today in and around La Veta, CO...we just pulled up our photos and we definitely have a Red-Crossbill...it would have been at the start of the walk at Up Top...to the right of the road...we saw a bird with a great deal of red and then another bird that was yellowish...those were the Red-crossbills, a new life bird for us!

Poly...what a treat! It was great to have met you the other day...made "dropping in" worth the effort. Please see the events calendar here...I've posted some info regarding the June 14 hike. I sure hope you can make it. And...welcome! I think Gary has put together a lovely place, here.

In the mean-time, I'm going to post some (bad) pics of a bird I just discovered at my feeders and have no idea what it is. I've searched Sibley's and just can't find it. Perhaps you'll know...
