Yard bird #121 Yellow-billed Cuckoo!

Posted on June 4, 2011 at 10:27pm 0 Comments

This evening while having our dinner out on our covered porch...we kept hearing a call...we knew it sounded familiar but could not place it. I finally started going through the bird calls on my iPod one by one...until BINGO...we found it...Yellow-billed Cuckoo! It was in the very dense foliage to the west of...and between our house and the creek. We looked and looked...at times it was so close we kept thinking we would find it...but the light was fading fast and the bird was not coming out.  We… Continue

What a difference my dog has made to my birding!

Posted on May 26, 2011 at 12:31pm 6 Comments

Anyone who reads my posts on Cobirders or Cobirds knows they quite often begin with...this morning, while walking my dog, I saw...and it goes on from there.  When I acquired Scooter from a neighbor two years ago, I made a vow that he would have a better, fuller life than my previous dogs. Promised him I would walk him every day. I must confess that I had been watching a great deal of "The Dog Whisperer" and "It's Me or the Dog"...and figured  the whole walking him 3 to 5 miles a day…

Garter Snake ponderings

Posted on February 9, 2011 at 9:52am 1 Comment

This morning I ventured into my husband's "man cave" as that is where all our photo albums and birding reference materials are (yes, we still have actual, physical photo albums).  was startled and puzzled to find a snake on the concrete floor. My first thought was "it has to be dead" it was minus 7 degrees and while the "man cave" is heated...it is kept at a temp below that of the rest of the house. I then evaluated that it was a young garter snake...well less than pencil thin and…

I have been trying to update my profile photo. I enter settings, browse for a photo, open it...and it just sits there telling me it is browsing. I am very bad at this whole computer thing and would appreciate any help anyone cares to send my way.

Possibly Peru in 2010

Hi Colorado Birders,

Although this does not have to do with birding in Colorado, hope it is ok to ask for help!

We are trying to plan a birding adventure to Peru next year. We cannot afford the "big guns" such as Field Guides, Wings, or VENT...so are trying an agency called Tropical Nature. Has anyone out there got any suggestions?

Our proposed itinerary is as follows:

Cusco overnight,

Cock of the Rock Lodge for 2 nights

Amazonia Lodge 1… Continue

Poly...what a treat! It was great to have met you the other day...made "dropping in" worth the effort. Please see the events calendar here...I've posted some info regarding the June 14 hike. I sure hope you can make it. And...welcome! I think Gary has put together a lovely place, here.

In the mean-time, I'm going to post some (bad) pics of a bird I just discovered at my feeders and have no idea what it is. I've searched Sibley's and just can't find it. Perhaps you'll know...

Hey anyone who was on the AVAS birdwalk today in and around La Veta, CO...we just pulled up our photos and we definitely have a Red-Crossbill...it would have been at the start of the walk at Up Top...to the right of the road...we saw a bird with a great deal of red and then another bird that was yellowish...those were the Red-crossbills, a new life bird for us!

Hi Everyone,

We had a good birding weekend over in the San Luis Valley and then at our cabin in Forbes Park. We got off to a slow start at Zapata Falls...where we did not see any black swifts...but did see Spotted Towhees, an immature green-tailed towhee, Western Tanagers (one female had a red beak and it took us a little while to realize she had been eating the red berries we were seeing everywhere) and one Townsend Solitaire and a tree full of Bushtits
Then it was off to San Luis Lakes State Park...where we saw our first Black-crowned Night Heron of the day, but failed to relocate the Red-necked Phalarope...all the action seemed to be on the far side of the lake...and we have yet to purchase a spotting scope...sigh.
Next stop Home Lake State Wildlife Area, where we saw roosting Double-crested Cormorants, 7 Black-crowned Night Herons, Common Yellowthroats (a pair) , Lincoln's Sparrow (life bird), and a lone Clark's Nutcracker, then it was off to Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuge where we saw 25 Black Crowned night Herons, an American Bittern (only the second we have seen), a single American Avocet, White-faced Ibis, and our long awaited Sora(a life bird) , a Marbled Godwit, American Kestrals, Northern Harriers and Red-tailed and Swainson's Hawks. We ended up at our cabin in Forbes Park...after a night of heavy rain we were up and at it again in the morning...seeing Spotted and Green-tailed towhees, an Orange-crowned warbler (another lifer, chasing him through the drenched willows was fun!) Warbling Vireos, young Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers sharing the same tree of course Mountain Chickadees and Mountain Bluebirds all in the meadows around the cabin. It started looking like rain again so it was back in the truck to cruise a couple of small lakes where we saw a raft of Ring-necked ducks, more coots and Eared grebes than we could count, Blue-winged teals all with babies in various stages of development. It was then back to the cabin where we waited out the rain and back out right after it stopped. We then saw a pair of Cassin's Finches and a Lazuli Bunting sunning themselves in the same tree along with some thoroughly drenched Song and Chipping Sparrows...with a gorgeous rainbow in the background...we ended the day with a wonderful look at 14 Red-crossbills...at close range...all these years I have wanted to see these birds and this summer I have seen them everywhere I go! This morning in our yard was a returning Red-naped Sapsucker, a flock of Evening Grosbeaks and Black-headed Grosbeaks, Pine Siskins, American Goldfinches, a single Cedar Waxwing, Rufous, Broad-tailed and Calliope hummingbirds...all in a all a very good weekend!

Polly: Re Peru. We were there last year, Lima, Cusco and Machu Picchu. The latter was wonderful! If you have long enough at Machu Picchu, go to Inkaterra Lodge in town (Aqua Caliente), where there is a bird sanctuary and more beautiful hummingbirds than you can imagine, among other birds. You can just walk the grounds (free). Look for hummingbird feeders everywhere. We stayed at that lodge and would like to have stayed days longer because of all the various birds. Not so many at Machu itself, but a few.
