The Coloradoan (Fort Collins)

To learn. To see. To hear. To smell. To experience. To know.

This sequence brings life from the darkness of anonymity into the lightness of understanding. It is a sequence that draws you into the richness of life and living.

Bird Banter by Barb Gorges (Sage-grouse geology: find grouse, find oil)

This edition of Bird Banter, "How to get energy and save our sage grouse," appeared Apr. 2, 2008 in the Wyoming Tribune-Eagle's Outdoors section. Please contact the author, bgorges4@msn.com, for permission to reprint it in hard copy or virtual copy for commercial or nonprofit purposes. Thanks.

By Dan England, dengland@greeleytribune.com

Gary Lefko doesn't rely on a radio station, books on tape or trying to find a license plate from all 50 states to keep him entertained during his morning commute.

He just watches for birds.

THE VIRGINIA RAIL (BIRDS OF NANTUCKET)

Posted on March 29, 2008 at 7:04am 0 Comments

by Kenneth Turner Blackshaw

How many of you are thinking about a dance instead of a bird? Almost makes you wonder if the namers were being witty when they named it. Even more so when you find the name is not a good one. It turns out that Virginia is one of the more difficult spots to find this bird.

What you are thinking of is the "Virginia Reel," one of the oldest dances in the New World, the details of which were first published in England in 1685 by Sir Roger De… Continue

ARE BIRDERS GULLIBLE? (BIRDS OF NANTUCKET)

Posted on March 29, 2008 at 7:02am 0 Comments

by Kenneth Turner Blackshaw

Well, they should be, at least if they find themselves near any large body of water. You can't be outside on Nantucket more than a moment or two during daylight hours without having a gull in your life. Beginning bird watchers learn to look at every one, just to be sure it's 'just' a gull.

When birders come to the island for the first time their eyes are forever aloft. If you see a soaring bird on the mainland it is most likely a hawk and something… Continue

Gary,

I love the sight and will try to update as often as possible. Birds that have been sighted in Fort Collins over the past week and called in by my customers are Blue Grosbeak (at the ELC), lots of Lazuli Bunting sightings at feeders in the morning, Broad-tailed hummingbirds have been in town also. Hope this is a good start.

Thanks,

Lauren

Gary, One more attempt at this. We have a creamy white bird visiting the backyard feeder along with the sparrows and finches---about the size of a sparrow..Possibly an albino?
Have pics. don't know how to send them. Please advise, and much thanks.

Hello Gary!!! It would be great to meet up with you. I will have to ask for patience though -- I am relatively new to this birding stuff, but it is one of my favorite things to do. Falconry is my biggest hobby, but it brings birding along with it! I'd really like to meet up with ya sometime. Is there a certain area of birding you enjoy more than others -- like shorebirds, raptors, songbirds. . .? Thanks for replying!!!

Hi Gary,
I was so pleased to find this group last night.
Thank you for being here!
Thank you for your short video clip of the
sandhill cranes.
I live at Carter Lake, west of Loveland and on October 11, there were thousands of sandhill cranes that flew right over us.
It was incredible!
Love, Zoe

Hi Gary. Thanks for the welcome. Glad you enjoyed the photos. With great interest I saw the story on the Streak-backed Oriole. I am almost afraid to say it, but I saw this bird at my pond all summer...Unfortunately at that time I did not have the Nikon yet. Please keep this quiet for now, but I will let you know if it returns to my location this spring. I kept looking thru my Peterson guide but never saw it there. I know what I saw though. I will have the camera ready this time...

Hey Gary,
Yes! We have met! Hope you are well. I actually joined this network because I've been trying to find your Great Pikes Peak Birding Trail site. It was SO helpful! I'm looking for more info on Chico Basin and other local birding locations. Can I find that info out on this site? How do I navigate it?
I was just at Bosque del Apache NWR this past weekend and now I'm all inspired to start birding again.
See ya!

Thanks for your comments about my pictures. I'm a real novice at all this. I'll get my backyard list together. That's how I founds this site today; I was searching for the nane of a bird.

Okay, off the top of my head:
Cioopers Hawks (3 of them nest in a couple of cottonwoods) At least one is a baby from the year before.
I just saw a black hawk about 2 months ago. It chased a small bird up onto my patio.
Finches (house, gold some others)
hummingbirds - not sure what kind
chickadees
cordilleran flycatcher (in the summer)
Lots of nuthatches (white, pygmy and rose breasted)
Woodpeckers (downy, hairy, flicker)
Blue Jays but I haven't seen them around for a couple of years.
robins
doves
some type of owl
Thanks for asking!
