No, the squirrels don't touch the suet; but, they love the nut/sunflower/berry mixture I put in a cedar barn house and the hanging seed/nut bar. Now that I put the bar in a cage to keep the squirrels from taking off with it, I haven't seen the birds on it. So, will most likely have to take the cage down. I'm thinking of getting feeders that have cages around them to see if that will keep the squirrels from eating the bird food.
I do feed the squirrels a corn/sunflower/peanut mixture with extra peanuts, which helps to keep them off the bird food if I keep their bowl filled up.
No, I can't think of any bird that fits that description; but, that won't stop me from trying to figure out what it is. If I do, I'll let you know.
Maybe I'll just buy some suet first then, and see how it goes. What about the squirrels. Do they try to eat the suet too? I've never seen a grackle here so I won't worry about that right now, I guess.
Also, I saw a bird with white circles on each side of his head, a black stripe on top of the head to the back of the neck and brown wings. Based on the really poor description, do you have any idea what it might be?
When I say black hawk, I mean that's what color it was. I don't know if it was an official Blackhawk but anyway, it was a completey different hawk I hadn't seen before. I love seeing the hawks but I feel like I'm serving up a bird buffet for them with all the feeders I have. Today i was thinking about making homemade suet. Have you tried that. I sort of became overwhelmed reading about the different suet feeders and how the suet attracts grackles and other undesirables. What do you think? Will I see some different birds that don't just want black sunflower seeds.
Hi Pam - I love hawks as well. I have 3 that live in the cottonwoods behind my house. I got to see a toddler hawk up close last year right outside my bedroom window. I guess it was a Coopers hawk! They're all gone right now, but about a month ago, I saw a black hawk swooping after a little bird on my patio.
