Black headed Towhee, a new bird for me!

Yesterday I had, for me, an unusual visitor to my feeder.  Got the binoculars and a better view this morning, a male black headed towhee.  According to my bird book they aren't normally a Colorado resident.

Garter Snake ponderings

This morning I ventured into my husband's "man cave" as that is where all our photo albums and birding reference materials are (yes, we still have actual, physical photo albums).  was startled and puzzled to find a snake on the concrete floor. My first thought was "it has to be dead" it was minus 7 degrees and while the "man cave" is heated...it is kept at a temp below that of the rest of the house. I then evaluated that it was a young garter snake...well less than pencil thin and…
