The Platte river is very, very low - there are places shallow enough to walk across just south of Platteville. The water fowl was not as varied and numerous as usual per the landowner, but it was magical to me. We were disappointed that the only wood ducks spotted were in the air. Two large dogs roaming along the river played a part in that, no doubt. The green-winged teal were everywhere and they didn't seem a bit jumpy. None of the photos or videos were successful because of the long distances, poor color contrast due to cloud cover, and/or photographer stupidity.
Important fact: the Doubletree restaurant has an amazing lunch and dinner buffet on the second and fourth Wednesdays. I will definitely schedule my birding trips accordingly from now on!
Just south of Fort Collins, a great-tailed grackle sat on a tree right next to the road near Timberline and Carpenter as I drove to Platteville.
Birds I saw along the Platte: northern harrier, yellow-headed blackbirds, red-winged blackbirds, white-crowned sparrows, lark sparrows, song sparrow (heard, not seen), bald eagle (1), green-winged teals, gadwalls, Canada geese, starlings, wood ducks, robins, kingfisher (1), American white pelican, meadowlarks, wild turkeys, two distinct breeding pair of red-tailed hawks.
I figured birding was out today due to snow and cold. A flock of Bohemian waxwings cheered me up by spending a good deal of time in my neighbor's linden trees. The usual gang fed in my backyard today (mourning doves, house finches, house sparrows, a meadowlark, a northern flicker, starlings, robins, American and lesser goldfinches). Four newcomers, dark-eyed juncos, visited today as well.
